Collins Class Submarines Approved and Unapproved Projects

There are 12 major capital projects under management within the Collins submarine program to improve the reliability and capability of the submarine fleet. Nine of these have been approved by Government and are in various stages of delivery, while three are yet to be approved and are being prepared for consideration by Government. Most of the approved projects are nearing completion and are scheduled for closure by 2019. The unapproved projects seek to upgrade the Collins communications, electronic warfare and sonar systems, and to enhance Australia’s submarine escape and rescue capability.

  • Legacy Defects
  • Combat System Augmentation and platform system modifications to two submarines and a shore infrastructure upgrade.

SEA1354 PH1

Unapproved

  • Capability Upgrade
  • Will provide capability for on-scene treatment of personnel from a disabled submarine, whether submerged or on the surface.

SEA1439 PH3.1

Approved

  • Obsolescence Treatment
  • Will replace or remediate current ISCMMS in all six CCSMs

  • Legacy Defects
  • Platform system upgrades to all CCSMs to improve reliability, sustainability, safety and capability.

SEA1429 PH2

Approved

  • Capability Upgrade
  • Install, integrate and test the Replacement Heavyweight Torpedo for all six CCSMs.

  • Platform system upgrades including automation to some emergency systems into all submarines.

SEA1439 PH6

  • Capability Upgrade
  • Will upgrade the sonar systems through a program of replace and/or improvement on all six CCSMs.

  • Install EHF Communications Capability for a single CCSM.

  • Capability Upgrade and Obsolescence Treatment
  • Will improve the Electronic Warfare & External Communications on all six CCSMs.

  • Installation of the communications fit that was developed and tested under SEA1439 Phase 4B, into five submarines.

SEA1439 PH4B

  • Capability Upgrade
  • Addresses issues with sonar system, communications system & navigation equipment. The project also included the, design, install & test of the prototype communications system to be installed under SEA1439 PH5B1

SEA1439 PH4A

  • Capability Upgrade
  • Install, integrate and test the AN/BYG-1 Tactical and Weapon Control system for all six CCSMs.
